Welcome Simon Tan into the Capuchin as Postulant 2026
February 26, 2026
Our Custody was filled with quiet joy as we welcomed Simon Tan, 36, from Sungai Bakap, Penang, into the Postulancy during the Holy Mass celebrated by Fr Gilbert James OFMCap, our Custos. The celebration carried special meaning for us, as the last acceptance of a postulant was in 2022. For some time, we have been praying and waiting for new vocations to our Capuchin Franciscan life, and this year the Lord has blessed us with one who dared to respond generously to His call.
During the rite, Simon received the Holy Bible and the Tau Cross. These simple but powerful signs speak of our life: rooted in the Gospel and marked by the spirit of St Francis — a life of prayer, penance, fraternity, simplicity, and joy. The Tau he now wears is a reminder to live each day in conversion of heart and faithful love for Christ.
At the conclusion of the rite, the Custos entrusted Simon to the Postulant Director, Friar Tony Bingkuan OFMCap. Also present were Fr Ravi Alexander OFMCap, Fr David Reegan OFMCap, and the Aspirant, whose presence reflected the growing seed of vocation among us.
Simon will begin his one-year initial formation at Gethsemani Friary, Cheras. May this be a year of listening, learning, and growing in the Capuchin spirit. The evening continued with a simple fraternal meal, where gratitude and hope were shared around the table — a beautiful beginning to a new chapter in our Custody’s journey.
