June 21, 2025, Pusat Ziarah Keluarga Kudus, Nulu Sosopon, Keningau, Sabah – It was a historic and memorable moment for the Capuchins of the Malaysia-Singapore Custody as four brothers—Br. Tony Bingkuan, OFMCap, from Penampang; Br. Randall Lee Ken Haw, OFMCap, from Keningau; Br. Marthin Bin Steven, OFMCap, from Lahad Datu; and Br. Peter Bin Langgayang, OFMCap, from Tamparuli—made their perpetual profession in the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin.
It was a deeply emotional and momentous occasion—not only for the Custody but also for the Diocese of Keningau. For the very first time, the Custody witnessed four brothers making their perpetual profession together. This event was equally historic for the Diocese, as it marked the first time a perpetual profession by a religious community was celebrated within its territory. The celebration drew a diverse and joyful gathering: the families of the brothers, diocesan clergy, members of various religious congregations across the dioceses of Sabah—including the OFS—and many lay faithful.
Adding to the significance of the day was the presence of a delegation of friars from the Philippines, led by the Provincial Minister, Br. Edgar S. Martinez, OFMCap. Their participation highlighted the unity and support of the wider Capuchin fraternity, making this a truly landmark event for the region.
The Mass was presided over by Bishop Cornelius Piong, Bishop of the Diocese of Keningau. The Gospel was proclaimed by Rev. Fr. Gilbert James, OFMCap, Custos of the Capuchin Malaysia-Singapore Custody, and the homily was delivered by Rev. Fr. Michael Raymond, OFMCap, the First Councilor of the same Custody. In his homily, Fr. Michael emphasized the chosen theme of the profession, “My God and My All,” taken from The Little Flowers of St. Francis. He stated, “To take God as one’s all is no simple matter,” reminding the professandi of the radical response rooted in baptism and matured into a life that bears beautiful fruit. The Custos, Fr. Gilbert James, received the vows of the four brothers and offered words of encouragement during his post-Mass address. He quoted the words of the prophet Samuel: “Here I am, I come to do your will,” urging the brothers not to fear God’s call. Bishop Cornelius Piong also took the opportunity to congratulate the brothers and called on them to embrace their missionary vocation with fervour.
After the Holy Mass ended, a fellowship gathering followed, during which the Custody, in gratitude to those who came for the celebration, served a simple meal. It was a moment of thankfulness as the brothers expressed their appreciation to all who came to support the event—because without them, the celebration would have been incomplete.
The enthusiasm of those who participated was remarkable. The MPP of the Diocese of Keningau played a major role in making the celebration possible, with their unwavering support in liturgy, event planning, fellowship, and more.
It was a joyful occasion, and everyone went home with smiles on their faces. The celebration served as a meaningful connection between the Capuchins and the Diocese of Keningau, as well as the laypeople who attended. It reflected a spirit of synodality, filled with hope in the hearts of all who came to know more about the Capuchin Franciscans, and how the Capuchins are reaching out through such celebrations.
This was made possible through the wonderful gift of God, expressed through the support of the bishops, the MPP, the religious communities, the OFS, the clergy, and the people. Through this celebration, the Capuchins were truly present in their midst.
