CUSTODY OF MALAYSIA-SINGAPORE CAPUCHIN ANNUAL RETREAT 2025
July 24, 2025
July 14-20, Gethsemani Custodial Friary, Cheras Selangor – The Capuchin friars of the Malaysia-Singapore Custody convened for their week-long annual retreat at Gethsemani Custodial Centre, Cheras Selangor. This event brought together friars from various fraternities across Malaysia, although some were unable to attend due to prior commitments. The retreat master, Br. Thomas Beth from the Capuchin Province of St. Augustine, Philadelphia, USA, led the retreat.
The recent retreat was a deeply meaningful experience, as it brought the brothers together once again after spending time apart in their individual fraternities. Freed temporarily from their regular duties and responsibilities, they were given the opportunity to focus on their spiritual growth and personal reflection. The retreat served as a time of renewal—helping the brothers reconnect with their faith, nourish their spiritual lives, and find peace within themselves.
Br. Thomas Betz, OFMCap, served as the retreat master and played a vital role in guiding the brothers throughout this journey. By sharing his personal experiences—both before and after entering religious life—he inspired the brothers and reminded them of their sacred calling: to live as brothers to all, and as priests devoted to service and spiritual leadership.
This retreat was more than just a pause from ministry—it was a sacred space for renewal and bonding. Through shared prayer, silent reflection, personal meet up with the retreat master and liturgical celebrations, the brothers deepened their connection with God and with one another. Fraternity was also strengthened. Simple conversations, shared meals, and communal laughter created a sense of belonging that reminded the brothers they are never alone in their vocation.
As the retreat came to a close, the brothers returned to their respected fraternities refreshed and reenergized—carrying with them a renewed sense of identity, purpose, and unity. It was a powerful reminder that caring for one’s inner life is essential to serving others with compassion and authenticity.
