The Solemnity of St. Pio Draws Over 1,000 Pilgrims This Year

ULU TIRAM, JOHOR – Over 1,200 pilgrims and devotees from across Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia gathered here in Ulu Tiram to celebrate the Solemnity of St. Pio of Pietrelcina at the Sanctuary of St. Pio, marking a powerful week of prayer, unity, and spiritual renewal.

The celebration began with a three-day Triduum from 18–20 September at Holy Family Church, each evening reflecting on the life of St. Pio: as a man of prayer, hope, trust, and mercy. The reflections were led by Friar Michael Raymond, OFM Cap., whose Franciscan simplicity and deep spiritual insight drew the faithful into a more profound encounter with God.

The feast day itself, on 21 September, was marked by a Solemn Mass and the sharing of personal testimonies. One of the most moving stories came from Jessie Khaw, who shared how she was miraculously healed from chronic asthma after assisting with the relic of St. Pio earlier this year.

“I hadn’t eaten cold food or been in crowded areas for 30 years due to asthma. After helping carry Padre Pio’s relic, I noticed my symptoms were gone. I even had ice cream, and nothing happened! It’s a miracle. I’m truly grateful to Padre Pio,” said Khaw.

The event was a joint effort by three local parishes—Church of Christ the King (CTK), Church of the Immaculate Conception (CIC), and Holy Family Church (HFC)—with volunteers also traveling from as far as Penang and Kuala Lumpur to assist. The collaboration reflected the Church’s synodal spirit of journeying together in faith and service.
